Denmark will host the 2016 World Rowing Masters Regatta

Denmark was awarded the 2016 World Rowing Masters Regatta at the annual FISA Ordinary Congress that took place on Monday, 2 September following the completion of the 2013 World Rowing Championships in Chungju, Korea. Denmark was up against the strong contestants from Lithuania, Slovenia and Bulgaria

Denmark had success at the lanes in Chungju in Korea winning two gold medals in LM1x and in LM4- and also in regards to the awarding of the 2016 World Rowing Masters Regatta.

The Danish coastline is 7,314 km and Denmark has more than 1,000 lakes. This explains why Denmark has a long-standing and strong tradition for rowing on both elite and recreational levels. Nevertheless it has been quite some years since Denmark last hosted a rowing World Championship.

“It is a huge recognition that FISA has awarded the 2016 World Rowing Masters Regatta to Denmark. The many volunteers within rowing have over the last 10 years worked hard to get international rowing back to one of the world’s most beautiful sports arenas. The 2016 World Rowing Masters Regatta is hopefully the beginning of more world class rowing events in Denmark. With a World Masters Regatta we can show that the Danish Rowing Federation can do more than win gold at the World Championships and Olympics. World Master’s rowing is for anyone over 27 years and up to +85 years. There are races for teams where men and women row together. My hope is that many Danish rowers will seize this unique opportunity to meet with friends for reunion and fun competition,” says Henning Bay Nielsen, chairman of the Danish Rowing Federation.

“Hosting the 2016 World Rowing Masters Regatta is an honor for Denmark. It gives us the opportunity to make an event, which is right on target with the objectives of FISA. We are confident that we can show an event of high international standard in the beautiful and natural surroundings of Lake Bagsvaerd, with everything at close range and handled by experienced event partners,” says Lars Lundov, CEO of Sport Event Denmark that will partner the event.

The 2016 World Rowing Masters Regatta will be organised by the Danish Rowing Federation and Sport Event Denmark and the Cities of Copenhagen, Gladsaxe and Lyngby-Taarbæk will partner the event.
