Doha, 28 October, 2013 – Announced today by the International Handball Federation (IHF), the 2019 Men’s World Championship will be staged by Denmark and Germany. This decision has just been made by the IHF at their Council meeting in Doha, Qatar. Denmark and Germany presented an extremely strong joint bid and were up against very worthy competitors from Poland and Slovakia – Hungary.
In a unified bid, Denmark and Germany presented an extremely strong bid with the focus of bringing Handball to the forefront of sport. In the lead up to 2019, together these two countries will focus their platform for the World Championship on three key areas – Promotion, Progress and Partnership, with the goal of bringing the sport to more fans and spectators worldwide.
President of the German Handball Federation, Bernhard Bauer stated: “We are very happy to be hosting the World Championship in 2019. The decision of the IHF Council is strongly connected with a high responsibility for all of us. We have great plans to use the Women’s World Championships 2015 in Denmark and 2017 in Germany plus the IHF’s 2019 Men’s World Championship in Denmark and Germany to create a highly evolving and continuous public interest for the sport of handball. In doing so we want to inspire especially the younger generations and to create a new euphoria for handball among people of all ages.”
Danish Handball Federation President, Per Bertelsen stated, “Accomplished! Denmark and Germany to host the World Championship in 2019! Now, we are coming together to share this with the entire world of handball and to further expand our sport; bringing it to the forefront of international sport. The IHF’s 2019 Men’s World Championship will form the ideal platform for creating worldwide promotion, progress and partnerships. Since we signed an agreement with the Germans, we have worked extremely hard on a strong joint bid. The fact that we won today is not least thanks to Sport Event Denmark, which has been invaluable in the intense bidding process with knowledge, insights and legwork.”
Sport Event Denmark CEO, Lars Lundov stated, “Denmark and Germany will for the world championships (Women’s in 2015 in Denmark and 2017 in Germany and the Men’s World Championship in 2019 ) also be hosting an innovative World Handball Forum, which will be an international convention for the continued development of handball with workshops, discussion sessions, exhibitions, training sessions and meetings between leaders within handball, handball players, companies, NGOs , fans, etc.”
FACTS about the IHF’s 2019 Men’s World Championship to be held in Denmark and Germany:
– Currently all preliminary pools will be held in Germany and Denmark. The semi-finals will be held in Germany and the finals and the President’s Cup in Denmark.
– Denmark and Germany will also host a World Handball Forum at the following World Championships – Women’s in 2015 in Denmark, Women’s in 2017 in Germany and the Men’s World Championship in 2019. The large-scaled World Handball Forum will be an international convention for handball meetings, discussions between handball and business partners.
