2015 ISAF Women’s Match Racing World Championship will be staged in Middelfart, Denmark. This has just been decided after the presentations in Oman on Monday, and today it has been confirmed officially by ISAF. The Danish bid was up against Szczecin – Swinoujscie, Poland, Long Beach, California, USA, Lysekil, Sweden and Sheboygan, Wisconsin, USA.
– The awarding of the championship means that the absolute elite in female match racing comes to Denmark in 2015. Within the world of sailing this race really has much prestige, and we are very happy to play hosts. It is important for us to attract the Word Championship and it will strengthen Danish sailing and put focus on our sport, says Søren Mathiesen Laugesen, Match Racing Denmark who made the presentation together with the national event organisation and partner, Sport Event Denmark.
– We staged the European Championships in match racing in 2009 and the prestigious ISAF Nations Cup Grand Final 2013. Some of the reasons why we were awarded the event were actually our previous events that were staged at a world class level both in terms of the event set up and in terms of our very successful media coverage. We will of course base our preparations on the experiences gained from these events, says Søren Mathiesen Laugesen.
Denmark has participated every year since 1999, and in seven out of the fifteen previous events Denmark has won medals.
– Denmark is a sailing nation and destination. The awarding of the 2015 ISAF Women’s Match Racing World Championship underlines this position. Denmark has been hosting a long series of sailing events over the years and has therefor built a robust insight in hosting and adding value to the events which we will engage once again in relation to the 2015 ISAF Women’s Match Racing World Championship to the benefit of sailors and crews, spectators, media and ISAF, says Lars Lundov, CEO, Sport Event Denmark.
