New World Class Half Marathon in Copenhagen

Copenhagen sees a new, annual world-class half marathon, organized by Denmark’s largest race organizer and the Danish Athletic Federation. Taking place for the first time on 20 September 2015, Copenhagen Half Marathon aims to become the first designated IAAF Gold Label half marathon in the Nordic countries.

In eleven months, Copenhagen will be hosting a brand new world-class half marathon organized in a joint venture between the Danish Athletic Federation and Denmark’s largest race organizer, Sparta Athletics & Running. Building on both organizers’ previous race successes such as the 2014 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships and the Powerade Copenhagen Half Marathon and with full endorsement and support from partners and municipalities in Copenhagen, the aim is to take road race events in Denmark to a top-level.

First IAAF Gold Label Half Marathon In The Nordic Countries

The new Copenhagen Half Marathon’s defined aim is to obtain the most prestigiuos international quality designation, the IAAF Road Race Gold Label. As the first IAAF Gold Label half marathon in the Nordic countries and only the sixth throughout Europe, the Copenhagen Half Marathon will be adhering to the highest international road race standards. This means that the world elite will be lining up in Copenhagen to compete on a truly fast course through central Copenhagen and Frederiksberg as they did at the 2014 World Half Marathon Championships in Copenhagen.

Expectations are, that thousands of runners and spectators as well as a wide array of partners will take part in the city’s new annual race event, thus, in future, placing Copenhagen among the world’s top half marathons.

”For runners, spectators, and not least for the city of Copenhagen, the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships were a huge succes. It is those kind of events that contribute to making Copenhagen one of the world’s leading sports events destinations. Therefore I am very pleased that Copenhagen now sees an annual race event of high international standards”, says Mayor for Culture and Leisure in Copenhagen, Carl Christian Ebbesen.

”The IAAF World Half Marathon Championships earlier this year was a truly spectacular event, and it is amazing how it paved the way for an annual, international half marathon for both recreational runners and elite athletes”, says Lars Lundov, CEO of Sport Event Denmark, who is a partner of Copenhagen Half Marathon.

The Best of The Best Into A Brand New Race

”We are extremely proud to be able to present our new race together with Sparta Athletics & Running – just as we promised we would after the World Half Marathon Championships. Specifically, we will be picking the very best elements from the World Half Marathon Championships and Sparta’s many big race events and combine them into a new, annual, world-class half marathon”, tells CEO of the Danish Athletic Federation, Jakob Larsen.

”Sparta has, especially during recent years, built up a firm foundation for organizing top class race events. We are very excited about taking this next leap towards a Gold Label race, in partnership with the Danish Athletic Federation”, says president of Sparta Athletics & Running, Niels Jørgen Holdt.
