In exactly one year, the LEN European Short Course Championships will be staged in the brand new multi-purpose arena, Royal Arena in Copenhagen. The championships will be the first sporting event of the arena, which will serve as home ground for Olympic gold medal-winner Pernille Blume.
– It does not get any bigger than this. To have the opportunity to jump in the pool right here in Royal Arena at the European Championships, says Olympic champion Pernille Blume. Along with the Danish World Championship squad, she participated in Danish Swimming Federation’s kick off-event right in the middle of the arena, which during the coming years will host a range of concerts and sporting events.
The Danish Swimming Federation marked the countdown along with partners of the event, Sport Event Denmark, Wonderful Copenhagen, the City of Copenhagen, the Capital Region and the largest swimming club of Copenhagen.
Royal Arena is almost finished. It will be the new state of the art multi-purpose arena of Copenhagen. With one year to go, the bare concrete and working crew with safety caps still gives the impression of a building site, but on 13th of December 2017 the large floor will be covered with two temporary swimming pools and the fastest swimmers of Europe. The first plans were laid out back in 2013 when Denmark hosted the European Short Course Championships for the first time. Carrying out the plans for 2017 will be the great number of volunteers coming from the largest swimming club in Copenhagen.
The kick-off event in Royal Arena also involved a presentation of the official mascot of the Championships, Dana. She is a mermaid and symbolises the Danish swimmers and clubs – both tough and graceful at the same time. The many swimmers of Danish swimming clubs contested to draw the best and most creative mascot among which a winning bid was found.
– We have a sparkling new arena. We have sparkling swimmers and an outstanding support from the Danish swimming clubs at next year’s European Championships in Royal Arena. Along with Sport Event Denmark and the City of Copenhagen we are ready to invite all Danes and international spectators to these great championships, says Pia Holmen, CEO, Danish Swimming Federation.
– The LEN European Short Course Championships 2017 will be the first sporting event in Royal Arena. That equals a new era of great indoor championships right here in Copenhagen which gives us the opportunity to also attract Swedish spectators. We now have a multi-purpose arena in both East and West, and that gives us the upper hand when it comes to hosting great, international sporting events, says CEO of Sport Event Denmark, Lars Lundov.
