Copenhagen to host the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships 2021

In 2021 the Danish Gymnastics Federation and Sport Event Denmark will host the biggest international gymnastics championship. The World Championships in 2021 in the Olympic discipline Artistic Gymnastics has just been awarded to the Danish Gymnastics Federation.

For two weeks Royal Arena in Copenhagen will be home to Olympic gymnasts, international world stars, and spectators from all over the world. Many consider artistic gymnastics to be the finest discipline in gymnastics, as well as it is one of the biggest disciplines on the Olympic programme when it comes to the number of spectators and television viewers. Thus, spectators should be looking forward to world-class gymnastics in a joyous and impressive arena.

President of the Danish Gymnastics Federation, Anders Jacobsen about the hosting: ”It’s a great achievement to be awarded the 50th Artistic Gymnastics World Championships. Not just for the Federation, but for Danish gymnastics as a whole. An event of this format fits very well into the course and development we have for gymnastics in Denmark. I’m sure many of our nearly 200,000 members – and the rest of Denmark – will have a gymnastics experience for life when we host the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in 2021 together with Sport Event Denmark and the city of Copenhagen.”

A strong partnership has granted Denmark the great event
When Copenhagen will be home to more than 1,000 gymnasts and officials in 2021, it is thanks to a strong cooperation between Wonderful Copenhagen, the city of Copenhagen, and Sport Event Denmark. The latter and GymDanmark have had a year-long and ambitious cooperation to attract great gymnastics events to Denmark. Sport Event Denmark was also in on it when GymDanmark hosted the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in 2006 in Aarhus. Since then the cooperation has borne fruit of e.g. European TeamGym Championships 2012, Aarhus, Trampoline, Tumbling & DMT World Championships 2015, Odense, and this January the European TeamGym Championships 2020, Copenhagen – Ballerup were also obtained.

”It’s great that the series of significant world championship arrangements in Denmark now gets another part, i.e. the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in 2021. Many follow the spectacular competitions in the artistic gymnastics at the Olympic Summer Games. The artistic gymnastics is one of the most significant sports seen in an Olympic perspective, alongside athletics and swimming. Therefore, in the next three and a half year we will work hard on creating a great and festive experience in Royal Arena,” says Lars Lundov, CEO in Sport Event Denmark.

The hosting city is also an important partner in staging the event in Denmark.

”We look forward to welcoming athletes, delegates and spectators to our city in 2021. Gymnastics is popular with many Copenhageners and the championships will undoubtedly generate a lot of buzz and excitement in Copenhagen. With state-of-the-art arenas and venues, the city lends itself perfectly to an event like the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships. In fact, the championships are the latest in a string of sport events that Copenhagen has won the bid to host, which is a testament to its position as one of the most popular sports destinations,” says Kit Lykketoft, Director of Conventions, Wonderful Copenhagen.
