Silkeborg will host the ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships in 2027. Today, ICF awarded the event to Denmark. The city of Silkeborg plays host together with the Danish Canoe and Kayak Association and Sport Event Denmark. Denmark was up against strong nations such as Hungary, Romania, and the Netherlands when the “race” began in January.
In 2022, Denmark and Silkeborg set new standards for staging canoe marathons with the European Championships. Silkeborg provided a world class event set-up and Denmark won several senior and youth medals.
In 2027, there is another opportunity for the World of Canoeing to revisit Denmark and compete in the best, epic, and natural settings.
ICF President Thomas Konietzko was impressed “It was the best presentation of the day. Fantastic presentation on a very high level. You are committed friends of our sport. It gave us great joy to see the focus on sustainability for instance the idea of bicycles for the participants.”
The chairman of the Danish Canoe and Kayak Association Tom Bundesen Faurschou says enthusiastically “We love to create the perfect environment for our world-class athletes. When we also promote Danish values such as sustainability and innovation while strengthening canoeing, it is perfect. Today is a good day for Danish and international canoe sport.”
Silkeborg is an obvious choice. The area offers a unique scene where the city, water, and nature merge and create excellent conditions for staging a blast of a world championship. Here, the spectators will have the pleasure of following the nerve-wracking duels on the water and, simultaneously, be in the heart of a city with all the opportunities that come with it.
“We are very proud to provide water and city for the world championships here in Silkeborg. We are one of the leading canoe areas in Europe. We have many talents in water sports – including some of the world’s best kayakers. Furthermore, we have some truly unique settings here in Denmark’s Outdoor Capital, which we look forward to bringing into play,” says Mayor Helle Gade.
“It is quite unique. Denmark and Silkeborg have just won the hosting of the 2027 ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships. The corresponding European Championships was staged in Silkeborg in 2022, and in August, the same World Championships will be staged on lake Jels. The sport of canoeing in Denmark wins many international medals – and the sport also excells in the hosting of international championships,” says Lars Lundov, CEO, Sport Event Denmark.
The worlds in 2027 will be staged in front of the iconic fountain on the lake from 1 to 5 September 2027 The Canoe Marathon World Championships in the same discipline takes place on Lake Jels from 28 August to 3 September this summer. Here we expect 1000 participants from 45 nations.
